Call For Artists! Help Shape the Future of Fishweir Crossing

Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) and the Fishweir Crossing Roundabouts Planning Committee invite experienced artists to submit qualifications for a new public sculpture at the Fishweir Crossing Roundabouts on Herschel Street, a highly visible and well-traveled gateway connecting Riverside Avondale, Fairfax Manor, Lakeside Park, and Ortega.

RFQ submissions open: June 1, 2026 
RFQ questions accepted through: 11:59 p.m. on June 9, 2026
RFQ submissions due by: 11:59 p.m. EST on June 30, 2026
Finalists selected: July 15, 2026

This is an exciting opportunity and a serious infrastructure project. Up to three artists will be selected as finalists to create conceptual designs, with a paid stipend of $2,500 each. Artists must be able to demonstrate the ability to design sculptures appropriate to civic, transportation, and highly visible outdoor settings and meet Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) criteria. 

A volunteer neighborhood Roundabouts Planning Committee was formed under the umbrella of RAP and has been working with the City of Jacksonville (COJ) and FDOT to understand the opportunities and constraints of the locations on State Road 211 on Herschel Street and St. Johns Avenue.

The vision is to transform Fishweir Crossing into a beloved and distinctive place through public sculpture, thoughtful landscaping, trees, lighting, and design enhancements. The goal is a space that is rooted in the surrounding neighborhoods and inspired by the creek, canopy and community that make this place special.

The RFQ is the first step. Up to three qualified finalists will each be paid a stipend of $2,500 to create design concepts. Those concepts will be reviewed by the COJ and FDOT, and suitable concepts will be shared with the community for input.

The full Fishweir Crossing project will require a budget of $150,000-$200,000. A fundraising committee has been formed and will launch a campaign in the fall, to coincide with the completion of initial conceptual design.
