Cleaning Up the Historic Marker Pillars
If you’ve gone by without looking, you may not have noticed the markers that say “Welcome to our neighborhood” in Riverside/Avondale. The markers, which include a brief history of the neighborhood and its legacy in the National Register of Historic Places, were installed by RAP around 2000. Today, the brick and bronze pillars stand in 6 places in our neighborhood and keeping them clean provides benefit to the neighborhood.
Through the City of Jacksonville Neighborhood Improvement Matching Grant Program, we funded getting each of the 6 pillars “soft washed” to remove dirt, grime, paint, and graffiti. We further coordinated a fantastic small volunteer group of nearby homeowners to polish the bronze signs with the guidance of Finn’s Brass & Silver located in Lakeshore. We are especially thankful for the weeding, light landscaping, and trimming at many of the markers.
Thank you to neighbors Shaun Newman, Kim Clontz, Kat Schmidberger, and Brooks Andrews!
