The Mizner Sanctuary is debatably the most significant architectural structure in all of Riverside Avondale. The hidden art throughout the sanctuary is meaningful, impactful and a pleasant surprise once recognized. Addison Mizner, a secular architect, designed only one church in his broad and impactful architectural career that focused mostly on Mediterranean revival throughout South Florida. Riverside Baptist Church, as it was called when he completed the project in 1926, was built for his mother.
Join architects Angela Schifanella and Doug Lane as they lead a discussion on the unique stories, art and architecture that make this Riverside landmark so special. Doors open at 6pm and the program will begin at 6:30pm.
The church recently received a matching funds grant of $360,000 from the National Fund for Sacred Places (NFSP) for the restoration and preservation of the building’s exterior. Weatherproofing and window restoration is needed to immediately secure the space for future generations to enjoy.
The Porchlight Series events are free and open to the public. Space is limited so RSVP now!
The mission of the Porchlight Series is to provide value to those who love historic homes that helps strengthen the appeal of preservation and connect interested people to the businesses, craftsmen, and tradespeople that do the work to protect historic properties in our community.
