City Council Approves RAP ReLEAF Funding

Next step is contractor search for installation of trees.

Riverside Avondale Preservation is pleased to announce that funding for the RAP ReLEAF project was approved by the City Council at the end of February, and is now poised to move forward. The project total is 382 trees at an estimated cost of $781,748, which is being allocated by the Tree Mitigation Fund. Council Member Jim Love sponsored the legislation.

Thank you for your patience! This has been a pilot project, and has taken longer than we expected. During the past year, the City's Tree Commission has been refining policies and procedures in regards to the use of the Tree Mitigation Fund, and those are now established.

With the funding now approved, the city is selecting a tree contractor for the ReLEAF project, and they expect planting to start in approximately two months.

A complete list of the RAP ReLEAF approved tree locations and species can be found in the online tree canopy planner here. When you get to the homepage, on the right side click on "display by" then select "project name" from the drop down box. Deselect "Toggle All" on top of the list. Find and click on "RAP ReLeaf" from the list of projects. A circle will appear on the map over our neighborhood. Select "load trees" from the circle displayed over our neighborhood. Individual tree planting sites will be displayed.

In June 2018, The ReLEAF team collected requests via an online survey and through volunteers who walked the neighborhood. After submitting these requests, the City's Urban Forester and Arborists went to each site to select the "right tree, right location" for each spot.

Please note that there were some requests whose right of way locations are not included. This could be for a variety of reasons - such as electrical lines, proximity to other trees, or the size of the right of way, or there may have been an error in the submission. RAP is attempting to individually contact all those whose requests were not able to be fulfilled via this project.

If your location does not appear on the tree map, and you feel your location can accommodate a tree, please submit a new request via the City of Jacksonville's CARE system. If a tree cannot go there, there will be notes in the CARE issue as to why the tree cannot be located there.

Also, for anyone who did not participate, but who still wants a tree, any property owner may request a tree in the public right of way by contacting the CARE system, above.

Thank you.
